PureSolo Safety for Parents
PureSolo is a great place for kids to record music and to share their recordings with friends and family.
It offers many benefits for children learning to play and practice their music and we have done everything we can to make it a safe and fun place for kids.
However, like all Internet sites, there are basic rules that need to be observed in order to keep kids safe.
Here are some of our safety tips for you in addition to the details in our Terms and Conditions, Safety and Privacy Policies found on our site.
- Be aware and discuss what your kids are doing online
- Explain to your children that making friends online can be fun but online friends should remain online. They should never meet anyone in the real world that they met online. If they want to meet anyone they should take you – the parent.
- Since children can upload and record their music or use a webcam to share, they should be aware that real time abuse can occur and they should tell you if anything unusual happens or they feel uncomfortable about anything.
- Children should be told not to post any personal information, about themselves, their password or where they live.
- Your children should be encouraged to use their PureSolo message board and sharing features to interact with people they know in the real world.
- You should tell your child that if anyone does bully them or behave unusually they should press the Report Abuse button as well as telling you.
- If you have any questions you can contact us at parents [at] puresolo.com
- PureSolo uses several layers of notification, to enable you to monitor your child’s activities in the PureSolo community.
Parenting on PureSolo
We at PureSolo take the issue of child protection & safety very seriously and we have implemented a number of measures to safeguard children and reassure parents.
- Users that are under 16 must check the Under 16 box when signing in.
- These users need to enter a parent or guardian email address which will be sent an email that the under 16 has signed up and if the parent is an existing user automatically makes them friends.
Parental Process and Parental Monitoring
- When signing up as a child, a parent's email address is required.
- Public visitors and adults who are not friends CANNOT view children's profiles.
Friendships
- Members can search for a child they know by entering their full email address or user name into the ‘Find Other Members’ box.
- Search results then show a generic thumbnail image for the child and their first name, with an ‘Add as a Friend’ link.
- When ‘Add as a Friend’ is clicked, the target child's parent is sent an email with an 'Allow' or 'Deny' option. This determines whether or not the child is allowed to accept or deny the friendship.
- The friend request remains in a pending state until the child's parent has made a decision.
- Once a decision is made, the IP address and date / time of the decision is logged in our database.
Content
- When a child uploads any content, it is visible only to that child on his/her own profile.
- Whenever a child uploads a piece of content, the parent is sent an email with an 'Allow' or 'Deny' option. This determines whether or not it should be visible to that child's friends.
- The content remains visible only to that child on his/her own profile until the child's parent has made a decision.
- Once a decision is made, the IP and date / time of the decision is logged in our database.
Wall Posting
- Free text wall posting is enabled for children.
- When a child sends or receives a wall post, the parent is sent a notification with the contents of that wall post so that they are able to monitor activity.
Profile
- A child can set his/her own profile image.
- Whenever a child uploads a profile image, the parent is sent a notification so that they are able to monitor activity.
- Only friends are able to see this image. It will be replaced in search results by a generic thumbnail to protect the child's identity.
Credits
- When a child’s account requires credit, they must ask their parent to enter their credit card details.
- The parent is then given the option to allow the child to top up automatically.
Pure Solo is an easy-to-use platform for developing musical skills by allowing users to practice and record over backing tracks whilst singing or playing an instrument, and then share their recorded versions with friends, family & teachers.
Why is it good for my children?
Kids love music. Many love singing or playing an instrument no matter what level they are, and they love computers. Pure Solo gives them a fun place to combine all of these activities and to share the results. When kids actually hear their own recordings, it provides an important boost to their confidence and allows them to progress and, most importantly, want to progress.
How much does it cost?
The software comes in the form of a small plugin which installs straight into your web browser and is completely free of charge. You then pay for content which ranges from £0.49 to £1.99, however most children’s content is at the lower end of the price range. Parents can arrange to credit the child’s account in a number of ways - from individual payments at the time of download, to an allowance facility which provides the child with credit to spend over time on PureSolo music files.
Why is there a cost?
There are several copyright payments - mechanical, graphic and others – which we need to pay to the composers, artists and publishers in order for us to legally provide the service. However, since you can make as many recordings as you like once you've purchased a file, we think you and your child will find it to be great value. You mentioned sharing, what are you doing to make it safe?
What else is Pure Solo doing to be safe?
Pure Solo is following many of the HMRC guidelines. Users can Report Abuse if they are unhappy about the way they are being treated or if language is abusive.
Here are some other common sense reminders for children:
- Never give out personal information, such as your real name, age, location, phone number or school.
- Never share your password with anyone except your parents. Someone else might use your password and pretend to be you, give out your personal information or do something that may get you into trouble.
- Tell your parents if someone says or does something on the Internet that makes you uncomfortable, or if someone asks you for personal information.
- Choose a username that does not reflect your real identity. Avoid names that are in any way suggestive, even if they seem innocent to you.
