Concert Review
Trombone Shorty – James Brown With A Horn
He's James Brown with a horn. Really, two horns - because despite his name, Trombone Shorty is equally adept at blowing both the trombone and the trumpet, and if you catch him live, he'll blow you away in the process. In a city where brass players going back to Louis Armstrong are acclaimed royalty, Trombone Shorty, at age 25, is the King of New Orleans.
Shorty, a.k.a. Troy Andrews, was a prodigy bandleader at six years old, and has honed both his astonishing playing and his incendiary performances ever since. He now leads the band Orleans Avenue, a fiercely fun and funky 7-piece outfit made up of an equally youthful yet experienced Crescent City cast. Stirring together tastes of jazz, R&B and hip-hop with heaping helpings of funk and old-fashioned rock 'n' roll, the band self-describes their musical gumbo as SupaFunkRock.
